Atlanta Urban Renaissance Planning Council Moves Ahead With Mixed-Use Pathways and Walking Lanes

The Atlanta Urban Renaissance Planning Council has released a report that examines the current status of the urban landscape click here. The report finds that despite some degree of mixed-use development in Atlanta, most of the communities have a single business owner who dominates the center of town. Further, this business typically has an expensive, high-rise building on its north side. Only a few roads connect the business owners to each other and to the rest of the community. This causes a lack of connectivity to the south and east sides of the city, as well as to the North River area.

In contrast, the Atlanta Urban Renaissance Planning Council found that communities in the Southeast United States that are built on or near public transportation enjoy a more mixed-use landscape than those communities in the north. They found that mixed-use and direct linking to the rest of the city are far more common in the Southeast than anywhere else in the country. The planning council recommended that this be incorporated into all future real estate development plans. It is hoped that by creating such a neighborhood, the residents of one area will have a greater connection to the other parts of the city.

Also on the agenda for the Atlanta Urban Renaissance Planning Council was a study about the future of the Atlanta BeltLine. This is a multimodal transportation project which includes a light rail extension and a bus rapid transit system. The planks being stripped from the Atlanta BeltLine will link communities to the rest of the city via a walking and bike trail. The hope is that this will reduce automobile emissions in this already polluted area and help to raise the value of the property in the area. The plan also includes a proposal for a pedestrian tunnel, pedestrian plaza, and a lighting scheme for the BeltLine. The Atlanta Urban Renaissance Planning Council hoped that the multimodal plan would increase the value of properties along the corridor while providing a better walking experience for residents of the communities that are part of this massive project.
